The History of Kilden

From Industrial Roots to a Welcoming Retreat

The building dates back to 1929, and it was initially designed for industrial use, a purpose it served until we purchased it in 1997. We moved into a house that didn’t have a residential setup. However, there was a kitchen, some toilets, and bathroom facilities in a side building, along with a few rooms previously used as offices, where we made our home.

A Unique Home for Our Family

It was a large and unusual home for us and our four daughters, who were then 7, 6, 4, and 3 years old. The girls loved the place. They could roller skate and ride their bikes indoors. Over the next 15 years, we renovated. It was a long process, but the result is a large, lovely villa in the middle of the fields. The grounds have been transformed into a garden where hares and deer come to visit. Most recently, we built a beautiful greenhouse.

The Heart and Soul of Kilden Private Stay

Dorte is creative and interested in gardening, Danish history, and cooking, and loves having guests and showing them around all the beautiful and interesting places in our part of the country, Zealand. Jens is the handyman and entrepreneur who plays bridge, loves music, and enjoys being around people. We love to travel and meet new people.

We have traveled extensively in the USA, France, and Italy. When our daughters moved out, we became a foster family for 10 years. Now, in our early 60s and as grandparents, we want to share our lovely house with people who are curious about Denmark and the Danish way of life.

From Dream to Reality

The idea behind Kilden Private Stay came from our deep love for Denmark and our passion for welcoming guests. We wanted to create a place where we could share our appreciation for this beautiful country and offer a warm, personal luxurious experience. So, Kilden Private Stay was born. With a love for the stunning nature and history of Denmark, we’ve created a special retreat. We’re excited to share the beauty of Denmark and its hidden treasures with you.
